Long-Term Folic Acid for Elderly: Benefits or Risks?

When it comes to folic acid, many people's first impression might be that it's a nutrient for those preparing for pregnancy. However, in reality, a study published in the internationally renowned journal "Stroke" has pointed out that folic acid plays a significant role in controlling blood pressure and preventing strokes.

The reason folic acid can lower blood pressure is that it helps metabolize excessive homocysteine in hypertensive patients, thus stabilizing blood pressure. However, not all types of hypertensive patients are suitable for folic acid supplementation. It is generally recommended for high-risk cardiovascular patients and hypertensive patients with elevated homocysteine levels.
