1. What exactly is eye discharge?
Many people are unaware of what lies within our eyelids. In fact, there's a structure called the "meibomian gland." Where is it located? It's situated along the edge of our eyelids, near the eyelashes.
Continuously day and night, the meibomian gland secretes an oily substance clinically referred to as eye discharge. During the day, this oily secretion from the meibomian gland serves a protective function for the eyes.
When the eyes are closed at night, the secreted oil, along with dust that entered the eyes during the day and impurities from tears, accumulates in the corners of the eyes, forming eye discharge.
