Causes of Dry, Sore, and Swollen Eyes

Classification of Dry Eye:

Based on etiology:

01. Aqueous deficiency dry eye: Due to impaired function of tear gland secretion, such as congenital absence of lacrimal glands.

02. Mucin deficiency dry eye: Lack of mucin secretion, associated with conditions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome, trachoma, etc.

03. Lipid deficiency dry eye: Caused by dysfunction of meibomian glands, responsible for lipid secretion.

04. Tear film dynamics abnormality dry eye: Conditions like facial nerve palsy, ectropion, and entropion can lead to incomplete blinking, causing uneven distribution of tears on the ocular surface.

05. Mixed type dry eye: The most common type, resulting from a combination of the above causes.
